Dr. Matthias Waechter

Matthias Waechter studied History in Bonn, Freiburg, Paris and Rochester (New York). He received his PhD in 1994 and his « Habilitation » in 2004.

Between 1993 and 2000, he was assistant professor at the Department of History of the University of Freiburg. He joined the I.E.H.E.I. in 2000, first as DAAD visiting lecturer, then later as Director of the Master’s Programs. Since 2006, he is Director of the I.E.H.E.I..

He is a specialist in the contemporary history of the United States and France. He has published two books: Die Erfindung des amerikanischen Westens. Die Geschichte der Frontier-Debatte (1996), and Der Mythos des Gaullismus. Heldenkult, Geschichtspolitik und Ideologie (2006). He also an adjunct professor at the University of Freiburg and teaches International Relations at EDHEC Business School in Nice.





The Project "EU-Central Asia in the International System" (EUCAIS) is organised with significant funding from the VolkswagenFoundation and financially supported by the Lifelong Learning Programme JEAN MONNET of the European Commission.
